TRANS KALIMANTAN RAILWAY PROJECT

In accordance with the plan, the construction of the Trans Kalimantan railway first phase will connect Pontianak, West Kalimantan, to Balikpapan, East Kalimantan.

As noted in the document Director General of Railways Ministry of Transportation, will be built 10 railway in Kalimantan for the period 2015-2019. The railway line is the  line of Pontianak- State Border of 268 kilometers, Pontianak-Sanggau of 143 kilometers.

1.     Sanggau-Palangkaraya of 587 kilometers, B
2.     anjarmasin Palangkaraya of 194 kilometers,
3.     Banjarmasin-Tanjung of 196 kilometers,
4.     Tanjung-Balikpapan of 234 kilometers,
5.     Balikpapan-Samarinda of 89 kilometers,
6.     Samarinda-Lubuk Tutung of 145 kilometers,
7.     Tanjung Redep-Lubuk Tutung  of 293 kilometers, and
8.     The State Border- Tanjung Redep of 279 kilometers.

Targeted, railway construction started before 2017.

For South Kalimantan, The Trans Kalimantan railway network will be divided into several lane, including line of Banjarmasin Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan, and Banjarmasin-Tanjung has continued towards Balikpapan, East Kalimantan.

Railway projects in Kalimantan planned since May 2013 officially began on November 19, 2015. The inauguration of the project was attended by President Jokowi. Railway line in East Kalimantan will connect West Kutai, Paser, Penajam Paser Utara District, and Balikpapan. The line will be used both for railway passenger and freight transport.

In the construction of the Trans Kalimantan, the Russian railway company RZhD (Russian Railways) is interested to invest. It is proposed Russian Minister of Industry and Trade, Denis Valenrinovich Manturov, when he met the Chairman of Indonesia Regional Representative Council, Irman Gusman, to deliver a letter of Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Indonesia Parliament complex.

"We have discussed some of the economic cooperation with the Government of Indonesia. One railroad investment in Kalimantan by Russian Railways, with total investment of Rp 37 trillion," he said.

To encourage this project, in 2014, Russia in cooperation with the Provincial Government of East Kalimantan and PT Kereta Api Borneo (PT KAB), a subsidiary of Russian Railways, sending 50 students graduated from high school in East Kalimantan studied the railways in four prestigious universities in Russia.

If in Java 1 kilometer construction bugdet railway requires Rp 1 billion, then to Kalimantan need to Rp 3 billion - Rp 4 billion per kilometer. In addition, Kalimantan also require large and long bridges for railway line. Three major rivers in Kalimantan are Barito, Kapuas, and Kahayan.
